You lay the foundation for a healthy baby well before your child is born, and it's never too early to start planning. Good prenatal care and solid organization are both essential to your baby's well being. The next few months will be filled with wonder and joy, adjustments and changes, and they will also bring plenty of details and decisions to manage. Many of them relate directly to health. First, investigate the scope of your insurance coverage using questions for your health insurance provider on page 28. Health insurance polices vary widely and you need to learn exactly what financial obligations to expect during your entire pregnancy and delivery. Next, think about whether you'd like an obstetrician (OB), a midwife, or a combination of the two to advise and care for you during pregnancy, childbirth, and the weeks following delivery. Once you've decided which path to take, use the prenatal practitioner referral forms on page 29 to record referrals from friends and family. Use the obstetrician interview questions on pages 30-32 and/or the midwife interview questions on pages 33-35 to conduct interviews. Once you start visiting your practitioner, use the prenatal check-ups forms beginning on page 36 to record the details.
